Miami Beach Boardwalk: Walk, Run, Jog or Skate

Beach goers can walk, run, jog or skate from South Beach to North Beach on the Miami Beach boardwalk and beachwalks. Anchored by South Pointe Park, for roughly 7.5 miles, exercisers can stretch their legs and enjoy the ocean views as they make their way to North Shore Open Space Park. The Miami Beach boardwalk is well lit, provides excellent ocean views, and is friendly to both walkers and joggers. Stroll down to the beach for a walk after dinner, or wake up early and catch the sunrise while running on the boardwalk.

The winding, paved beachwalk in South Beach sits between Ocean Drive and the Sand Dunes. The beachwalk snakes its way north and provides a spot for joggers, Rollerbladers and walkers, who want to avoid the car traffic of the main road. Scattered water fountains provide a refreshing break on a hot day, while the foot wash and shower stations let beach goers clean off the sand before going shopping or dining. South Beach also has palm tree-shaded benches for staying put and people watching. The smell of the salt air tempts many to walk a little east and jump into the ocean for a swim.

Continuing north, the central Miami Beach wooden boardwalk starts at 21st Street and ends at 46th Street. This section is elevated above the sand and provides a pathway between the back of the hotels that line Collins Avenue and the beach. Several benches provide seating and spots for rest along the boardwalk. There is access by stairs to both Collins Avenue and the beach, and several hotels have their own private gates and cabanas located off the boardwalk. Fans of the movie “New in Town” will recognize this stretch of boardwalk from Renee Zellweger’s jogging scene.

From 47th Street to 63rd Street there is no boardwalk or beachwalk, and those venturing north must choose to walk along the sand beach or the sidewalks on Collins Avenue.

At 63rd Street, the beachwalk begins again with a little park that provides educational placards about the sea turtles, public showers, water fountains and a public parking lot. This north beachwalk extends from 63rd Street to the North Shore Open Space Park at 79th Street. Family-friendly, this beachwalk even has clean-up bags provided for dog walkers.

No bikes, skateboards or Rollerblades are permitted on the wooden section of the boardwalk in the mid-beach area, but everything is allowed on the beachwalks of the north and south. Boardwalkers and beachwalkers can find many cafes along Collins Avenue to grab a Cuban coffee or quick bite to eat while they explore the beach and exercise.
